Every year people apply for and receive a North Carolina EMS credential through legal recognition. Persons who currently hold an EMS credential from another state or with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians may be issued a North Carolina EMS credential through legal recognition. Persons seeking legal recognition must establish a North Carolina residence, attend an EMS educational program in North Carolina, or work for an approved North Carolina EMS provider.
As part of the process, applicants must supply the Office of EMS with the following information:
* a legible photocopy of the state or National Registry certification used for legal recognition; and
* an official transcript from the educational institution that conducted the EMS educational program, showing the course hours completed and the grade earned; and
* proof of an established residence in North Carolina, or affiliation with a licensed North Carolina EMS provider or EMS Educational Institution.
Due to the differences in each state regarding EMT-Intermediate educational programs, applicants seeking legal recognition as an EMT-Intermediate may be asked to provide additional information about the program.
Applicants considered eligible for legal recognition will be issued an equivalent North Carolina credential with an expiration date that matches the state or National Registry credential used to obtain legal recognition.
